Cardinal Burke stands firmly behind Cardinal Sarah’s call for ‘ad orientem’ worship

ROME, Italy, August 29, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Cardinal Raymond Burke has given a strong endorsement of Cardinal Robert Sarah’s recent encouragement for priests to begin celebrating Mass in accord with the ancient posture that recognizes God as the center of the liturgy.

Cardinal Burke said he is in total agreement with Cardinal Sarah’s recent request for priests to celebrate Mass ad orientem, or facing the Lord, because when a priest celebrates Mass, he is acting in the person of Christ and the focus should be on God.

Ad orientem, Latin for “to the East,” refers in liturgy to when the priest and the people in the congregation face the Lord in the tabernacle. It is how all Masses used to be celebrated before Vatican II.

Cardinal Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, made the request at an international sacred liturgy conference last month in London for the priests to celebrate Mass ad orientem whenever possible, beginning this Advent. The Vatican liturgy chief’s remarks had subsequently stirredsome pushback.

“I agree with him completely,” Cardinal Burke said in an international teleconference Monday.

The former prefect of the Vatican’s Apostolic Signatura went on to say he could not agree more with Cardinal Sarah and that much of the negative reaction to his request was baseless, unfair, and uninformed. “And I believe that many of the comments which were made afterward are not well informed and are not fair.”

The fundamental point of Cardinal Sarah’s request, and the question of the position of the priest in the congregation is key, Cardinal Burke told the journalists on the call, because the priest being at the head of the congregation is acting “in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, offering this worship to God,” and so all are facing the Lord.

“It’s not that he’s turning his back on anybody,” Cardinal Burke clarified. “This is often times what people say, ‘Well now the priest turned his back on us.’”

“Not at all,” the patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta said. “The priest as our spiritual father is leading us in this worship to lift our minds and hearts to God.”

Cardinal Sarah had also asked all Catholics to receive Holy Communion kneeling on the tongue, which is the Church’s norm, despite the allowances many western dioceses have to administer Communion in the hand.

While supporters of traditional and reverent liturgy applauded the request by Cardinal Sarah, the Vatican’s top liturgist since his appointment by Pope Francis in November 2014, response from both the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and then Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi played down the cardinal’s request. UK Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the archbishop of Westminster, in effect told priests in his diocese to disregard the request after he and othersincorrectly implied that the General Instruction of the Roman Missal holds that Mass should be celebrated with the priests facing the people.

Cardinal Sarah reaffirmed that Mass had become overly focused on the priest and the congregation earlier this month in an address to the clergy of the Archdiocese of Colombo.

The Guinean cardinal echoed Cardinal Burke’s assessment that his encouragement last month for a return to more sacred liturgy was misinterpreted, according to a Catholic Herald report, with Cardinal Sarah saying, “This talk received a lot of attention — some of it not always very accurate!”

Cardinal Burke also made clear in his international press conference on Monday, when he addressed the many issues brought up in his new book Hope for the World, that there is nothing in the documents of the Second Vatican Council that demands or even suggests that Mass should now be celebrated with the priest facing the people.

“This is a discipline which was introduced afterwards and I think was part of the false liturgical reforms,” he stated.

“There’s the great temptation when the priest is facing the people to see him as some kind of a performer,” the former St. Louis archbishop said, “and now instead of the priest together with the people relating to God, somehow it becomes an interaction between the priest and the people.”

“The priest is the protagonist, it’s no longer our Lord Jesus Christ,” he said, “and this is a very fundamental gross error that has to be addressed.”

“And so Cardinal Sarah, I couldn’t agree more with him,” Cardinal Burke continued. “And I trust that with time people will recognize that the criticism which was lodged against him is completely unjustified.”

The criticism toward Cardinal Sarah is also not very sincere, Cardinal Burke went on to say, because Cardinal Sarah wrote the same thing about a return to ad orientemliturgy in June 2015 in L’Osservatore Romano, and there was no such backlash.

“He expressed the same strong convictions and nobody reacted then, and this is the official newspaper of the Holy See,” Cardinal Burke said. “And now suddenly in this context there’s this reaction, I don’t understand it.”

The sacred liturgy is the highest and most perfect expression of the Catholic faith, Cardinal Burke told the press conference, and when it’s celebrated correctly, with great dignity, we approach God himself. He objects to the contention that ad orientem liturgy means a priest is turning his back on the people, rather, it is a more God-centered expression of Holy Mass.

“No, it’s a greatest act of love for the people to be at their head, and to offer for themthe Holy Mass,” Cardinal Burke said. “Because the Eucharist can only be offered by Christ himself, and it’s the priest who sacramentally is Christ offering the Holy Mass. So let’s all just face the Lord, as we should.”

CANONICAL CLARIFICATION NEEDED FROM THE MISSIONARIES OF CHARITY ROME

How can a juridical person (Superior) not affirm in public an ex cathedra dogma? How can you also receive the Eucharist in this condition?

Fr. Sebastian Vazhakhala M.C denies the ex cathedra dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus and refused me permission to live temporarily a few years back at Casa Serena, Largo Preneste. It is the home for Aged and Shelterless under the management of his community the Missionaries of Charity Contemplative men. The Nephew of Fr. Sebastian Vazhakhala, Deacon Benedict also from India rejects the ex cathedra dogma since it was part of his formation at the University of St.Thomas Aqionas(Angelicum). He is In charge of a new home donated to the community in Rome. The Sisters In charge at the Missionaries of Charity, San Gregorio in Cielo told me to stop coming there. I was told I was not a Catholic because I affirmed the rigorist interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

I still consider them friends and have much affection for them.

However there is the issue of the ex cathedra dogma, heresy and sacrilege. There is the issue of the Eucharist.

Here is the ex cathedra dogma which every Superior according to Canon Law are obligated to affirm and teach others.

1. “There is but one universal Church of the faithful, outside which no one at all is saved.” (Pope Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council, 1215). Ex cathedra.

2.“We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.” (Pope Boniface VIII, the Bull Unam Sanctam, 1302.).Ex cathedra.
3.“The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church.” (Pope Eugene IV, the Bull Cantate Domino, 1441.) Ex cathedra – from the website Catholicism.org and “No Salvation outside the Church”: Link List, the Three Dogmatic Statements Regarding EENS

To reject an ex cathedra dogma is a mortal sin. You are automatically excommunicated. To reject the Creed is a mortal sin. We pray ‘I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins’. This is what the dogma says. Everyone needs the baptism of water to remove Original Sin.

We do not know of a single case of a person with Original Sin who does not need the Baptism of water to avoid Hell.

This is the Creed which the M.C Superiors in Rome do not affirm.

We also pray ‘I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church’. It’s the Holy Spirit, which guides the Magisterium of the Catholic Church to teach this centuries old teaching which comes from the time of Jesus (John 3:5,Matt:16:16 etc).

So the M.C Superiors are rejecting the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed. This is first class heresy. It is a rejection of the Athanasius Creed which says outside the Church there is no salvation.

In this condition how can Fr .Sebastian Vazhakhala and Deacon Benedict M.C offer the Novus Ordo Mass? How can the Superiors at San Gregorio, receive the Eucharist?

While maintaining his confusing and heretical rejection of the ex cathedra dogma Fr. Sebastian Vazhakhala, a good and likeable person and a friend, also distorts Vatican Council II, Lumen Gentium 16.

How can LG 16 refer to explicit baptism of desire or invincible ignorance?

The Council of Florence, which gave us the ex cathedra Cantate Domino, obviously knew there could be no explicit baptism of desire or invincible ignorance.

For us it is always implicit (a concept only) and unknown. It is only a probability known to God. So it can never be in conflict with the infallible teaching that everyone needs to be a formal, visible member of the Church to avoid Hell.

How can you reject the Creed and an ex cathedra dogma, interpret Vatican Council II as you like and believe this is not a scandal, heresy and a sacrilege at Mass?

How can the Superiors claim they are Catholic when they cannot affirm an ex cathedra dogma in public? How can they hold the post of a Superior when they are not Catholics?

The Movement known as the Lay Missionaries of Charity (LMC) is an International Association of Lay people: married and single who adhering to the Spirit and Charism of the M.C. Family make private (juridically) vows of Chastity (conjugal), Poverty, Obedience and the fourth vow of Whole-Hearted Free Service to the poorest of the poor beginning with the members of one's own family. Remaining in the heart of the world, the LMCs consecrate the world itself to God everywhere offering worship by the holiness of their lives expressed through prayer, penance and works of mercy, after the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

History - On April 16, 1984 four lay persons, all married made their "private vows" in the Chapel of the Missionaries of Charity - Contemplative in Via S. Agapito, 8 - Rome. These four were associated with our life of prayer, penance and works of mercy for several years; and then for about two years they studied the document that juts came out 'Familiaris Consortio' (22.11.1981) and then on Tuesday in the Holy Week of the extraordinary year of our redemption the first four took their private vows in the presence of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala M.C. and Community and many lay people.

Purpose - Its purpose is to sanctify themselves and their own families by consecrating themselves, their families and the whole world entirely to God after the example of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and practice the same virtues they practised.

Patron - The Holy Family of Nazareth is their heavenly patron, protector and intercessor.

Ecclesiastical Status - As the Statutes were ready, we applied to the Vicar of Rome who accepted, blessed approved our movement on 25th February, 1987. (see in the Statutes the copy of the letter of His Eminence, Cardinal Ugo Poletti of Rome).

Growth and Development - Thanks to God's grace the Movement began to grow quite rapidly and started to spread to the various countries of Europe, North, Central and South America and its Statutes translated into over 15 languages. Besides we have a small prayer book of our own and also many have the Liturgy of the Hours which they pray daily, at least the Lauds and Vespers.

The countries - There are LMCs in Europe (Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Holland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Poland, Hungary); in the Americas (U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Argentina), India, Macao...

There are over 1.000 consecrated persons, and several are in formation.

Formation - The LMCs have a period called 'Come and see' i.e. to frequent the group on a regular basis, to read, study and reflect on the Statutes, to come in touch with the Spiritual Director and the MC Brothers or Sisters, if possible. At the end the of the 'Come and See' period, the candidate(s) after due dialogue with the Spiritual Director, may begin the year of formation in preparation for their first vows (cf. Statutes Nos. 6 - 8).

Spiritual Director - Each group has to have a priest as its spiritual director who is expected to know the Statutes and the MC Spirit who guides the group together with the group Link.

Structure -

a) Spiritual Directors: local, national, international;

b) Lay Links: local (3 years), national (3 years), international (3 years).

Meetings - Each group meets once a week as a rule; if not possible once in two weeks ("The family that prays together stays together") (cfr. Statutes 42b, Nos. 1-9). National meeting once a year, if possible. Once in 4 or 5 years International meetings (?).

International Meetings - So far the Movement had two International meetings:1) Rome, October 5-10, 1992. Number of participants: 109, 16 countries.2) Lourdes, September 22-29, 1996. Number of participants: 175, 19 countries.

God bless you.
Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala M.C.

CARDINAL BURKE AND CARDINAL SARAH OFFER MASS WITH THE HERMENEUTIC OF RUPTURE : THERE IS A CHOICE

Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Sarah and the FSSP priests offer Holy Mass ad orientem and assume LG 16 refers to visible cases in 2016. This is irrational. It's inference and conclusion is non traditional. It creates the hermeneutic of rupture with the past

For me the issue is how do they interpret Vatican Council II, with Feeneyism ( there are no visible, personally known exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus in 2016) or with Cushingism ( there are objectively known exceptions to the dogma EENS in 2016 so every one does not need to be a member of the Catholic Church for salvation from Hell).

One can choose the Feeneyite theology, which is the traditional theology of the saints and popes, and also attend the Novus Ordo Mass. This is what I do.

At any Holy Mass a Catholic can choose to interpret Vatican Council II and the dogma EENS with Feeneyism or Cushingism.Lumen Gentium 16 refers to someone visible or invisible.

This is irrespective if Mass is being offered ad orientem.
Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Sarah and the FSSP priests offers Holy Mass ad orientem and assume LG 16 refers to visible cases in 2016. This is irrational. It's inference and conclusion is non traditional. It creates the hermeneutic of rupture with the past. Since it negates extra ecclesiam nulla salus( Feeneyite) and the Syllabus or Errors.
This is heresy accepted by the contemporary magisterium.
The SSPX has to accept Vatican Council II ( LG 16, LG 8, UR 3, NA 2) as referring to visible cases in 2016 to receive canonical status like that of the FSSP priests.
Canonical petitions should be filed to clarify this issue.
Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Sarah and FSSP priests are offering Mass with a falsehood which re-interprets magisterial documents as being non traditional and a break with dogmatic teachings of the Catholic Church.

Meanwhile a Feeneyite, being a traditionalist on Catholic doctrine, who does not use this irrationality is persecuted by priests and bishops.
-Lionel Andrades

Why are they given canonical status when they reject Feeneyism which is rational, traditional and without the new theology based on being able to see what is invisible
eucharistandmission.blogspot.it/…/why-are-they-gi…

TERMS EXPLAINED
Feeneyism: It is the old theology and philosophical reaoning which says there are no known exceptions past or present, to the dogma EENS.There are no explicit cases to contradict the traditional interpretation of EENS.
Cushingism: It is the new theology and philosophical reasoning, which assumes there are known exceptions, past and present, to the dogma EENS, on the need for all to formally enter the Church. It assumes that the baptism of desire etc are not hypothetical but objectively known. In principle hypothetical cases are objective in the present times.
Baptism of Desire (Feeneyite): It refers to the hypothetical case of an unknown catechumen who desires the baptism of water but dies before he receives it and is saved. Since this is an invisible case in our reality it is not relevant to the dogma EENS.
Baptism of Desire (Cushingite): It refers to the known case of a catechumen who desires the baptism of water but dies before he receives it and is saved. Since this is a visible case or the SSPX it is relevant to the dogma EENS.

Invincible Ignorance ( Feeneyite): This refers to the hypothetical case of someone allegedly saved without the baptism of water in the Catholic Church, since he was in ignorance.
Invincible Ignorance (Cushingite): This refers to the explicit case of someone allegedly saved without the baptism of water in the Catholic Church, since he was in ignorance.Since it is an exception to the dogma EENS it is assumed to be objectively known in particular cases. This reasoning is irrational.
Council of Florence. One of the three Councils which defined the dogma EENS.It did not mention any exceptions. It did not mention the baptism of desire. It was Feeneyite.
Liberal theologians:They reinterpreted the baptism of desire and being saved in invincible ignorance, as objective cases, known in the present times.
Vatican Council II (Cushingite): It refers to the interpretation of Vatican Council II with Cushingism.LG 16, LG 8, UR 3, NA 2 etc refer not to hypothetical but known cases in the present times. So Vatican Council II emerges as a break with the dogma EENS.
Vatican Council II (Feeneyite):It refers to the interpretation of Vatican Council II with Feeneyism.LG 16, LG 8, UR 3, NA 2 etc refer to hypothetical cases, which are unknown personally in the present times. So Vatican Council II is not a break with EENS, the Syllabus of Errors, ecumenism of return, the Nicene Creed ( Feeneyite-one baptism),the teaching on the Social Reign of Christ the King over all political legislation and the non separation of Church and State( since all need to convert into the Church to avoid Hell).
Letter of the Holy Office 1949 to the Archbishop of Boston. It assumed hypothetical cases were defacto known in the present times. So it presented the baptism of desire etc as an explicit exception, to the traditional interpretation of the dogma EENS.It censured Fr.Leonard Feeney and the St.Benedict Center.Since they did not assume that the baptism of desire referred to a visible instead of invisible case. The Letter made the baptism of desire etc relevant to EENs.From the second part of this Letter has emerged the New Theology.

Letter of the Holy Office 1949 ( Feeneyite). It means accepting the Letter as Feeneyite based on the first part .It supports Fr. Leonard Feeney of Boston. The traditional interpretatiion of the dogma EENS does not mention any exceptions.
Letter of the Holy Office ( Cushingite). It is based on the second part of the Letter. It rejects the traditional interpretation of EENS. Since it considers the baptism of desire ( Cushingite-explicit) and being saved in invincible ignorance ( Cushingite-explicit cases) as being exceptions to EENS ( Feeneyite). It worngly assumes hypothetical cases are objectively visible and so they are exceptions to the first part of the Letter.
Baltimore Catechism. It assumed that the desire for the baptism of an unknown catechumen, who dies before receiving it and was saved, was a baptism like the baptism of water. So it was placed in the Baptism Section of the catechism. In other words it was wrongly assumed that the baptism of desire is visible and repeatable like the baptism of water or that we can administer it like the baptism of water. The Baltimore Catechism is accepted with the confusion.
Catechism of Pope X. It followed the Baltimore Catechism and placed the baptism of desire in the Baptism Section.

Nicene Creed ( Cushingite) It says 'I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins' and means there are more than three known baptisms. They are water, blood, desire, seeds of the Word etc.

Nicene Creed ( Feeneyite). It says 'I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and means there is one known baptism the baptism of water.

New Theology: It refers to the new theology in the Catholic Church based on hypothetical cases being objective in the present times. So it eliminates the dogma EENS.With the dogma EENS made obsolete the ecclesiology of the Church changes. There is a new ecclesiology which is a break with Tradition.

Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus ( Cushingite) .It refers to the dogma but with exceptions. All do not need to defacto convert into the Church in the present times, since there are exceptions.

Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus ( Feeneyite). It refers to the dogma as it was interpreted over the centuries. There are no known exceptions to all needing to formally enter the Church, with faith and baptism, to avoid Hell.

Catechism of the Catholic Church ( Cushingite).CCC 1257 contradicts the Principle of Non Contraduction. Also CCC 848 is based on the new theology and so is a rupture with the dogma EENS( Feeneyite).

Catechism of the Catholic Church ( Feeneyite).CCC 1257 does not contradict the Principle of Non Contradiction since there are no known exceptions to all needing the baptism of water for salvation. There are no known exceptions, since God is not limited to the Sacraments.
When CCC 846 states all who are saved are saved through Jesus and the Church,CCC 846 does not contradict the dogmatic teaching on all needin to formally enter the Church. CCC 846 does not contradict Ad Gentes 7 which states all need faith and baptism for salvation.
