Corpus Christi: Does Leo XIV Believe That Jesus Becomes Bread?

In his homily in Madrid on June 7, Leo XIV used the phrase that “the risen Lord [...] becomes bread to satiate our hunger for life.”

Catholic theology rejects the idea that Christ is changed into bread (the heresy commonly called impanation). At the Transubstantiation, the opposite happens: the substance of bread becomes the Body of Christ.

Read in a literal sense, the phrase “becomes bread” is at least ambiguous. Such language can only be understood in some poetic sense.

A normal formulation for a pope or even simple Catholic theologian would be: “The sacrifice of Christ is made sacramentally present under the appearance of bread.”
