Amoris Laetitia The Other Way Around

In the 1580s Spanish Franciscans established a mission on the island St Catherine near Florida in order to evangelize the Guale Indians.

The friars learned their language and built a Christian village. One day the son of the village’s chieftain took a second wife. Father Pedro de Corpa, the superior of the friars, asked him to dismiss the second wife. The culprit refused and Fr Pedro publicly denounced him.

As a consequence all friars were killed in September 1597. The head of Father Pedro was displayed on a pike.

The mission was founded anew in 1605 and prospered for nearly a century. In 1702 Protestant English colonists arrived and destroyed everything.

Twenty years ago archaeologists excavated the mission and its church and found over two million artefacts.
