Bishop in Peru: "I Resigned at 63 for Health Reasons"

German-born Bishop Reinhold Nann, 63, of Caraveli, Peru, unexpectedly resigned on Monday for health reasons. He has been a bishop since 2017.

On his personal website, he praises himself for having "achieved a lot" as a bishop in Peru. He thinks of social work and family catechesis: "Over time, these tasks have brought me stress and high blood pressure, as well as some disappointments."

He had also "probably caused some damage" with his impatience. He sincerely apologizes for this.

Since the coronavirus hysteria, his physical and mental health has deteriorated, Nann admits: "I can clearly feel that I no longer have the strength for this office."

After several check-ups, the doctors advised Nann to take a year off in Germany.

He will spend that time at his parents' house and at the Catholic psychiatric center 'Recollektiohaus' in Münsterschwarzach, Bavaria.
