Rev Ray Blake Has Died: Peacful, Humorous Priest "All About Defying Evil"

English priest Ray Blake has died this morning. Requiescat in pace.

He was a famous blogger since at least 2007 on MaryMagdalen.Blogspot.com and later on Twitter.com. He made Catholic internet a better place.

Rev Blake lived in Brighton and served as the parish priest at St Mary Magdalen’s Church in the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

His posts reflected a blend of pastoral care, doctrinal fidelity, and practical reflections on issues like praying, fasting, and traditional liturgy.

Rev Blake didn’t shy away from using candid language including Church politics and moral issues.

Fellow clergy described him as charitable, hard working, and courageous.

During the Covid-hysteria and after Traditionis custodes, he wrote in November 2021: "Naughty me! I've just blessed Holy Water using the Old Ritual."

Already in August 2007, he wrote about the amazing exorcism-heavy old rite of blessing water and salt. It is all about "entering into conflict with evil and disease": “In the old rite more or less everything first has to be claimed for Christ before it can be raised to the higher dignity of being blessed.”

But the modern rite, he wrote, is "sparse, clean cut, and doesn't really say a lot."

Last week, friends visited him, and when the nurse asked who they were, the priest, known for his dry humor, replied, "They’re selling me life insurance."

Rev Blake received all the last rites and will go to see God one day.
