Some Unresolved Questions Regarding ‘Abp.’ Viganò

A lot of attention has recently fallen on the former Vatican nuncio to the United States, ‘Archbishop’ Carlo Maria Viganò (b. 1941), who was excommunicated from the Vatican II Church for schism earlier this month after repeatedly attacking the errors of Vatican II and the post-conciliar magisterium and challenging the legitimacy of Jorge Bergoglio’s claim to the Papacy:

Excluded and Marginalized: Vatican Declares ‘Abp.’ Viganò Excommunicated for Schism

Based on his writings in the last few years, it seems clear that Vigano has publicly embraced a position of, or one very close to, classical Sedevacantism, which rejects the Vatican II religion and holds that the ‘Popes’ who promulgated it have been impostors. Obviously, he is to be commended for that.

However, while some sedevacantists are understandably happy to celebrate the new convert, we would like to advise some caution. The reason is that there are at least two things Vigano has written and done in public in his recent (post-conversion) past that call into question the sincerity of his apparent repudiation of the errors of Vatican II and of the Masonic infiltration of the Catholic Church.

These two things are not peccadillos, they are whoppers. We are talking about the frightful Naturalism Viganò put forward in his June 7, 2020 letter to President Donald Trump, and the public interreligious prayer rally in which he participated alongside Protestants and Jews later that year — all the while publicly excoriating the errors of Vatican II and the new religion at the same time. This should make any traditional Catholic at least cautious about embracing ‘Abp.’ Carlo Maria Viganò as an ally in the fight against the Vatican II religion.

To review and discuss this evidence, which other pundits have far too little taken notice of, Kevin Davis hosted Mario Derksen in a recent episode of the Catholic Family Podcast. The full video can be watched below or at this link directly on YouTube. It is 1 hour in length, filled with solid content that is insightful and informative:

To be clear: We do not claim that Vigano is insincere, or an infiltrator, a Freemason, a double agent, or anything of the kind. We do not presume to render a judgment on his person at all. We are merely pointing to the public record about what he has said and done, and infer that it behooves anyone to exercise caution in embracing Vigano as ‘one of us’ just yet.

What is the alternative, anyway? Should we turn a blind eye to the objective evidence because it disturbs our preferred narrative? As Catholics — indeed, even just as rational creatures — we must conform our minds to reality, not the other way around.

Of course ‘Abp.’ Viganò is welcome to weigh in on this matter at any time and explain himself, just as he has weighed in on so many other things since 2018.

But until then at least, let us practice “prudence, for it is more precious than silver” (Prov 16:16).
