Leo XIV Will Continue Francis' Path: "Showed Full Support For Liberal Wing of Augustinians"
Father Gabriel adds that Leo XIV has "as different style" than Francis, "Leo has a more discreet, contained and introverted character: he listens a lot and speaks little."
When asked if Leo XIV will manage to "balance tradition and openness [= relativism]", Father Gabriel replied: "It will be a difficult balance, I do not know to what extent he will be able to maintain it."
According to Father Gabriel, Francis got to know Father Robert Prevost in 2013 and 2015 and recognized him as "a man who was in his own mould".
Father Gabriel describes Leo XIV as "the son of Francis" who "will continue to open the paths [of distruction] initiated by the Argentinian, giving more importance to the laity and women and deepening the synodal reform at a perhaps more moderate pace."
The last time, Father Gabriel spoke with Leo XIV was in 2018 at the Nigerian chapter of the Augustinians: "When he was prior general, he was very helpful to our Brazilian group, especially when there were tensions regarding the pastoral line. We were more in tune with the Liberation Theology line, whereas other Augustinians were not. He told us that he understood perfectly the path we were following and, in a moment of conflict, showed us his full support and confidence."
