Leo XIV Will Continue Francis' Path: "Showed Full Support For Liberal Wing of Augustinians"
"Leo XIV will continue in Francis' line, but without alarming the traditionalists so much. Francis opened many paths, but he created some cracks in the walls of the Catholic Church." This is the prediction of the Brazilian liberation theologian and Augustinian Father Paulo Gabriel, speaking to ReligionDigital.org on July 14.
Father Gabriel adds that Leo XIV has "as different style" than Francis, "Leo has a more discreet, contained and introverted character: he listens a lot and speaks little."
When asked if Leo XIV will manage to "balance tradition and openness [= relativism]", Father Gabriel replied: "It will be a difficult balance, I do not know to what extent he will be able to maintain it."
According to Father Gabriel, Francis got to know Father Robert Prevost in 2013 and 2015 and recognized him as "a man who was in his own mould".
