French Bishops Decry Appointment of Homosexual Rapist as Diocesan Chancellor
Abbé Spina was convicted in 2006 and sentenced to four years in prison for raping a 16-year-old boy in 1993.
In an 10 August statement, the bishops’ conference, led by Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline of Marseille, wrote that such an appointment reopens wounds, fuels suspicion and confuses the faithful.
"We have engaged in constructive dialogue with Archbishop de Kerimel, inviting him to reconsider his decision regarding the appointment of the chancellor of his diocese," said Cardinal Aveline.
Monsignor de Kerimel claimed that he chose "mercy" for the homosexual priest. However, he showed no such "mercy" to the priest of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter, whom he expelled from Grenoble, his former diocese, for no juste reason.
