Pope Pays Tribute to Brother Roger Schütz

Pope Benedict XVI has paid tribute to Brother Roger Schütz (1915-2005) in a brief letter published in L’Osservatore Romano. Brother Roger was the founder of the Taizé ecumenical community. The Pope called him an “untiring witness of Gospel, peace and reconciliation” and a “pioneer on the difficult path towards the unity of the disciples of Christ”. The Pope added: “Now that he has entered into eternal joy, he continues to speak to us. His testimony of an ecumenism of holiness can inspire us on our path towards unity.”

The Foundation of Martyrdom is Simple

Pope Benedict XVIth centered his Wednesday audience in Castel Gandolfo on martyrdom in light of the frequency of feasts for martyrs in the month of August. He taught that the foundation of martyrdom is really quite simple. It's based, he said, "on the death of Jesus, on his supreme sacrifice of love, consummated on the Cross so that we might have life."

Bridge Lit for Mother Teresa

On August 26th the Peace Bridge, which crosses the Niagara River between western New York and Ontario, will be lit in blue and white in honor of the centenary of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’s birth. The two colors represent the habit of the Missionaries of Charity who were founded by Mother Teresa. Bishop Edward Kmiec of the Buffalo diocese and Msgr. Wayne Kirkpatrick from St. Catharines, Ontario, had sought the lighting of the bridge after the owner of the Empire State Building denied a similar request.

A 25-year-old woman, a resident of the Tumkur district in the southern Karnataka state in India, was killed by her husband on August 9. She had rejected his plan to kill the baby girl, who had been born to the couple the previous week. Because of gender prejudice, the federal government has reported that more than 10 million girls are now “missing” in India because of sex-selection abortions.

Demon-Museum Will Be Opened

The city of Oruro in Bolivia is working on a demon-Museum. The organizers say this will increase the folklore image of the city. The devil is an important player in the carnival of Oruro. The museum shows demon costumes of the past 100 years. If all works the way it is planed, it will open in late August.
