Revisiting the Anointing of the Sick: Some Problems Today
The Church needs to clarify the administration of the sacrament of the anointing of the sick for a number of reasons.
I have witnessed a number of other quite common practices that are also difficult to square with the norms in Pope Paul VI’s Sacram Unctionem Infirmorum (On the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick) and the subsequent Ordo regarding Pastoral Care of the Sick (PCS).
For instance, there is the abuse of so-called healing liturgies in which anyone in attendance who is ill may receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick without qualification.
There is often no requirement stated that the illness must be serious in the objective sense proposed in the Ordo, and regardless, there would be no way of checking even if that norm were stated.
Anyone can be anointed whether they have a terminal illness, chronic back pain, or headache. The norms are, in any meaningful sense, simply by …More

Thank you for bringing this article and clarifying the way this sacrament should be administered. I am thank ful that the few priests I know use it properly.
We need to pray and sacrifice more for our priests so that they can be obedient to God, our Pope and our holy catholic church.
These articles are very instructive. Tanks again, shalomMore

I am amazed, shocked and troubled as well by the number of persons who after being told who may be annointed get up and march down the aisle for the annointing anway. This includes entire families! Both young and I mean toddlers to adults! The vast majoruty and I mean over 200 persons march up receiving this precious sacrament. This to me is disrespectful of the Annointing of the Sick. At this mass the relics of St. Peregrine are also venerated later in the Mass and everyone is invited to come forward to venerate, which I have no problem with.

The Servite Fathers allow anyone and everyone who comes up to be annointed and that is flat out wrong!

While I am writing, the chapel of Mary is beautiful, however, the Tabernacle has been placed on a side altar and the original High Altar is bare with the exception of the crucifix. At Christmas, Lent and Easter there are scenery that reflects the season. Too bad Our Blessed Savior is relgated to a side altar. I suppose those of us who are facing life threatening and life-shortening disease understand how it feels to be ignored in many ways as Our Dear Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is shove to the side. Such a sahme especially in a place that is so peaceful and tranquil.
