Our Lady of Covadonga's Basilica commemorates the battle against Muslim invasion conquest. Most of Spain had been conquered, because the Catholics were lukewarm. However, the Catholics at Covadonga would not surrender (Islam means submit...). A statute of Our Lady was erected, and the small army led by St. Pelayo asked for her protection and victory. The Catholics did what they could, fought valiantly, and God did the rest. Muslim arrows returned to kill them, a terrible storm beat down on them, huge boulders crashed down on them, large numbers were swept away in a flooded river, etc. The Muslim hordes had to retreat and the area was not conquered. Our Lady was publicly acknowledged for her help.
