I understand the possible need of cleaning the stones, which is said to remove certain destructive chemicals. Ditto for Chartres Cathedral.

Both have seen destructive fires and sanctity as well as impiety. And Chartres was a very important center of Neo Platonism in the 12th century. To present cleaned versions as if they were new seems to soil them with the naive self preoccupation of the overblown yet fragile ego of 21st century man. If the two churches could talk, We've seen it all before might be heard.
