The People of Papua New Guinea were at one time Cannibal tribes, but now many of them are devout Roman Catholics. I have many friends from there. The masks I am seeing that look like "mud men" are very similar to some of the masks of PNG. I don't think they are brought into mass, but are more cultural icons to represent from whence the individual families derived and are therefore limited to cultural events and not to holy mass.

Maybe the "mud men" (I apologize I do not know the name of this tribe) are representing that we our battle is not with flesh and blood and they have the "spiritual arrows" to be shot at the enemies of our soul.
