Yes, things are "far calmer" in Austria, because they are more dead. In the last twenty years Austria lost one million Catholics. Most of them were practicing and were not replaced.
Yes, there is "no public protest" (i.e. from the commercial media), because the Church has capitulated in front of them. The media have become the true evangelizers, while the bishops are their pastoral assistants. Therefore the media call them "men of dialogue".
Remember that they used to be called "men of the Church".

it’s because Austrians who dreamed of change simply gave up and walked away, so in a sense, what the Church has today is the peace of the grave.
