Twelve Years Jail for Argentinean Founder
Father Rubén Rosa Torino, 67, the founder of the contemplative Hermanos Discípulos de Jesús de San Juan Bautista (Brothers Disciples of Jesus of St. John the Baptist) in Salta, Argentina, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on July 8.
He was found guilty of aggravated sexual abuse of Yair Gyurkovitz, 25, and Valeria Zarza, 47, his personal assistant, and simple sexual abuse of Jonatan Alustiza, 26, all three former members of Rosa’s community.
The abuses happened in 2005 and 2013. The prosecutor had asked for 22 years, the defence for acquittal. Gyurkovitz told the court that he entered the order in 2010 at 14 and was homosexually abused in 2012 by Father Felipe (Nicolás Parma). In 2014, Gyurkovitz informed Rosa about this. Rosa asked him to forgive and became his spiritual guide.
Later, Rosa started asking him to pull down his trousers to let him examin whether he suffered from varicocele, a testicular disease. Gyurkovitz said that at first, he felt very ashamed, but then the touching “became natural,” as he “trusted” Rosa. Strangely, he claimed that he only became aware of the abuse when he met an ex-member who had lodged complaints against the congregation.
After sentencing, Rosa – who had been under house arrest in a retirement home for health reasons since 2016 - was arrested and transferred to the infirmary of Villa las Rosas prison in Salta.
According to a psychologist who evaluated him, Rosa has a superior intellectual, a double personality, and possesses psychopathic and histrionic traits characteristics, with a servile and domineering profile.
The Vatican suppressed the Hermanos Discípulos de Jesús in June 2019. Rosa had founded the group in 1986. It had 19 branches in Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Spain, and Palestine.
