Former Nicaragua Nuncio Waldemar Sommertag, 54, assured Colombian interlocutors support for coup plots hatched in Colombia to overthrow the Managua government – and was wiretapped by Nicaraguan security forces.
As a result, he was first sacked as dean of the ambassadors and then expelled from the country.
After learned of Sommertag's nonchalant conversations, the Vatican refrained from repeating its original protest over the nuncio’s expulsion, writes Sante Cavalleri on FaroDiRoma.it (July 29).
In the meantime, the right-wing Columbian regime of Iván Duque has been voted out of office.
Cavalleri sees a parallel with Hugo Rodriguez, the new US ambassador to Nicaragua who had his entry permit revoked after he told the US Senate that Nicaragua was becoming a “pariah,” compared it to a “dictatorship,” and hinted that he was planning to overthrow the government.
