Papua New Guinea Declares Christian Identity - Against 'Catholic' Bishops
The decision was made by an overwhelming majority of 80 votes in favor and only four against. The amendment adds a declaration to the preamble of the constitution:
"We acknowledge and declare God, the Father, Jesus Christ, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, to be our Creator and Sustainer of the whole universe, and the source of our powers and authorities, delegated to the people and all persons within the geographical jurisdiction of Papua New Guinea."
The Bible will be recognized as a national symbol. Prime Minister James Marape, a vocal supporter of the amendment, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. "I'm happy," he said.
The Trinitarian reference was lobbied for by evangelical groups. The Catholic bishops have opposed the amendment for months.
