Procession of the Holy Blood
Every year on Ascension Day, the Procession of the Holy Blood passes through the historic city center of Bruges. The Procession of the Holy Blood was created in 1304 as an expression of gratitude and faith.
The dominating theme is the remembrance of the suffering of Jesus Christ. The biblical narrations constitute the basis of the procession. Thematically, the Procession of the Holy Blood is divided into four parts. The evocation starts with the Old Testament, from Paradise to the Rorate caeli. Next comes the New Testament, from Birth in Bethlehem to Pentecost. The third part tells how the relic of the Holy Blood ended up in Bruges. In the last part, the members of the Noble Brotherhood of the Holy Blood accompany the shrine in which the precious relic is stored.
More than 1800 participants sing, play music, dance and act. The style of the procession reminds of the Burgundian time when guildsmen, craftsmen, brotherhoods and rhetoric chambers were responsible for the performance of the scenes. The Procession of the Holy Blood is an event that still moves the whole city to this day and was recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009.

Chaque année, le jour de l’Ascension, la procession du Saint-Sang parcourt le centre-ville historique de Bruges. La procession du Saint-Sang a vu le jour en 1304 en tant qu’expression de gratitude et de la foi.
Le thème dominant réfère à la Passion de Jésus-Christ. Les histoires de la Bible forment la base de la procession. Thématiquement, la procession du Saint-Sang compte quatre parties. L’évocation commence par l’Ancien Testament, du Paradis au Rorate. Vient ensuite le Nouveau Testament, de la naissance à Bethléem à la Pentecôte. La troisième partie montre comment la relique du Saint-Sang est finalement arrivée à Bruges. Dans la dernière partie, les membres de la Noble Confrérie du Saint-Sang escortent le reliquaire dans lequel est conservée la précieuse relique.
Plus de 1800 participants chantent, font de la musique, dansent et jouent. Le style de la procession rappelle la période bourguignonne où guildes, corporations, confréries et chambres de rhétorique étaient chargées de l’interprétation des scènes. La Procession du Saint‑Sang est un événement qui mobilise encore aujourd’hui toute la ville et qui fut inscrit en 2009 par l’UNESCO sur la Liste du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité.
