World Youth Day: On Saturday at 4.45 p.m., Pope Francis paid a private visit to the Roman Basilica of Saint Mary Major. He asked the Virgin for her protection for his upcoming journey to Brazil. The Pope entered the Basilica through the door of the Sacristy and immediately went to the chapel where the image of the Madonna Salus Populi Romani is displayed. The Holy Father prayed for over half an hour, then he offered a wreath and lit a candle which carried the symbolic logo of the World Youth Day. The Basilica remained open to the public and many faithful were present. Before leaving the basilica the Pope briefly addressed them. At 6 p. m., the Holy Father returned to the Vatican.
