He was airlifted to Santa Chiara hospital in Trento where he died after hours of agony. Gianola was leading a group of sixty boys from his parish during a summer camp. Sister Silvia assisted him.
The accident happened at around 11 a.m. when Gianola slipped and fell fifteen metres into the void and then rolled down other fifteen metres on a grassy slope.
In April he published his last book “Guariti da Gesù. Lectio sul Vangelo di Marco” (Healed by Jesus. Lesson on the Gospel of Mark) containing texts he wrote during the Covid curfew.
On Sunday, the day before Gianola left for Trentino, he wrote on the Internet, "A beautiful [Sunday] Mass this morning, but now it's time for a holiday in the mountains with the oratory. Brentonico, we are coming!”
Gianola hailed from a family of nine children. He was ordained a priest in June 2004 for Milan Archdiocese, and was known for his guitar, his love for the mountains, and his secularised attire.
When he recited the prayer for the death, he used to say, “Eternal joy” instead of "Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord."
