Court Hears Secretly Taped Call With Francis
At the time - a few days before the financial trial began - Francis was recovering from his intestinal surgery.
Becciu asked Francis to confirm that he had authorised a payment for the release of kidnapped Sister Gloria in Mali. According to lawyers present, Francis appeared confused and said he only vaguely remembered and repeatedly asked for a written record of the request.
The recording was made by a third party in the room, a relative of Becciu. Vatican law does not provide for calling a pope as a witness at a trial.
In September 2020, Becciu was dismissed from his office and "deprived of his cardinal rights" - whatever that means.
