Just months after Istanbul's Hagia Sophia cathedral was converted into a mosque in the summer of 2020, Turkey's President Erdoğan announced the same fate for the nearby Chora Church of Christ the Saviour.
Since then, the church has been undergoing restoration work in preparation for its reopening as a mosque, which the state has announced will take place on 23 February (VimaOrthodoxias.gr).
The Chora Church is a unique monument, containing a famous fresco of the Resurrection of Christ and other important Christian mosaics.
The 6th century monastery was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in May 1453.
It operated as a museum from 1945 until the Turkish Supreme Court ruling in 2019 and Erdoğan's decree in August 2020, which ordered it to be converted back into a mosque.
