Contempo-Catholicism has modernized the sacrament of "penance" into "reconciliation", just as it modernized "sermons" into "homilies". The sacrament of reconciliation is administered (at the parishioner's choice) in a face to face setting. I've found it a much tougher go than the traditional confessional. The actual penances, though, are waaay easier.
