Enough Claptrap: Chinese Bishops Leave Ex-Synod Early

Halfway through the Ex-Synod, two Chinese state bishops are returning home, the Ex-Synod’s spokesman Ruffini announced on October 16.

Bishop Antonio Yao Shun of Jining and Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang of Zhoucun will return to China this week. Ruffini made a fool out of himself by claiming that they were leaving because “pastoral needs require their presence (sic) - implying that there is a "pastoral need" for bishops only in China while over hundred diocesan bishops can hang at the ex-synod without being missed at home.

Yang was consecrated in 2020 with "Vatican approval". He is vice-president of the Bishops’ Conference which is controlled by the state, and was elected as a leader of the Communist Patriotic Association in December 2016.
