Feigned Outrage: Catholic League’s Bill Donohue published an important piece about feigned outrage over sexual abuse. Donohue names Mark Ruffalo, the star of the film “Spotlight” who organized a scarcely attended protest outside a Cathedral before receiving his Oscar. Upon receiving his award, the movie’s screenwriter, Josh Singer, took the occasion to lecture the Pope. Donohue counters: “If these people were sincere, they would focus on all abusers, not just priests.”

Discrimination of Priests: Donohue shows how American courts discriminate priests. This February, a Brooklyn rabbi was sentenced to 60 days in jail for groping four boys, forcing two of them to perform oral sex on him. Donohue compares this with the Missouri priest, Fr. Shawn Ratigan, who was sentenced to 50 years in prison for possessing child pornography, even though he never abused anyone.

No “Spotlight” about Fr MacRae: In January, a rabbi from East Brunswick, New Jersey was convicted of indecent assault of a child under the age of 13. He was sentenced to 11 to 23 months. Donohue compares this with Fr. Gordon MacRae who was sentenced to 67 years for a crime that most independent observers agree he never committed. Donohue comments: “But there will be no “Spotlight” movie about MacRae’s ordeal. Bet on it.”

No Outrage: Other cases mentioned by Donohue: In January, a Saint Paul, Minnesota man was sentenced to 270 days in jail for molesting two girls under the age of 15. And a Schenectady, New York man who had previously raped a disabled woman was sentenced to six months in jail for abusing two girls: one was 7 and the other was 9.

No Outrage: In February, a Phoenix man was placed on probation for sexually abusing a teenage girl. And a West Linn, Oregon man was sentenced to two months in jail for sexually molesting male students. Also in February, a Cheyenne, Wyoming man was given 5 years probation for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl.
