Italy: 4.5 Years in Prison for a Bishop?

Sara Morri, an Italian prosecutor, has requested 4.5 years in prison for Monsignor Francesco Micciché, 81, the former bishop of Trapani, Sicily.

Monsignor Micciché was deposed in May 2012 at the age of 68. He is accused of 'diverting' (embezzling) 400,000 euros from the so-called '8 per mille' with which Italian taxpayers can support the Church.

According to the prosecution, he paid the money into a diocesan current account, which he accessed without reporting it.

This allegedly happened from 2007 to 2012, writes FaroDiRoma.it (29 October).

In 2012, Monsignor Miccichè was dismissed by Benedict XVI after an apostolic visitation and an investigation by the financial police.

The trial will resume on 16 December with the final speech of Miccichè's defender, Mario Caputo. The verdict could come the same day.

Well, then you would be scrapping the Concordat...between the Vatican State and the Italian State...in 1929...which enshrined certain Catholic benefits into Italian law as a direct and ongoing compensation for the theft of the Papal States and the loss in perpetuity of their revenues to the Papacy by the Italian revolutionary government of Garibaldi and King Victor Emmanuel II.
These benefits include a direct Catholic tax on Catholic Italians by the Italian government.
This includes the recognition by the Italian State of the Catholic Sacrament of Marriage, Matrimonial Canon Law, and the proscription of divorce for Catholics by the Italian government.
This includes the recognition by the Italian State of the sovereignty and territory of the Vatican State, and its extra-territorial possessions in Rome, and Italy, as well as the possession by the Vatican of everything below Rome ie. the Catacombs.
