Francis recalled the 500th anniversary of the election of Utrecht born Adrian VI (+1523) who tried to stop the beginning reformation in an April 7 audience for tne staff and seminarians of the Pontifical Teutonic (German) College .
He said that Adrian VI, during his twenty-months pontificate, sent a nuncio to Nuremberg “to reconcile Luther and his followers with the Church, and expressly asking forgiveness for the sins of the prelates of the Roman Curia.”
“Courageous,” Francis commented, “He would have plenty of work today” - as if Francis were not the main culprit for the present decadence in the Roman Curia.
