Nigeria Violence Is “Deliberate, Organized Killing of Christians,” Bishop Says

The violence in Nigeria’s Southern Taraba State is a “systematic killing of Christians,” Bishop Mark Maigida Nzukwein of Wukari told AciAfrica.org on February 15.

He described the continuous killings as genocide against Christians. “It is deliberate, organized killing of Christians across the board,” he said.

Bishop Maigida argued that if genocide is defined as the intentional and systematic extermination of a particular group, then the situation affecting Christians in Nigeria fits that description.

“The target actually is Christians. If other people who are non-Christians are affected, it may be collateral damage. But the organized plan is targeted at Christians and their communities across Nigeria,” Bishop Maigida said.

The roots of the unrest trace to the early 2000s. However, the most recent wave of violence in the State has been particularly devastating, with armed Fulani militia groups repeatedly invading communities with impunity.

While acknowledging that the state government has made attempts to intervene, Bishop Maigida said the response has been inadequate.

“The efforts are not really commensurate with the force that is unleashed on our people. People are being killed almost on a daily, weekly basis. And nothing, no serious security intervention.”

Homosexuality is widely taboo and illegal in Nigeria, with strong social, religious, and legal opposition. Same-sex relationships are criminalized nationwide, with penalties including up to 14 years in prison in the south and potential death penalties in some northern, Sharia-adopting states. LGBT individuals face severe social stigma, discrimination, and frequent violence.
Legal Status: Under the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013, same-sex marriage or civil unions are forbidden, and public displays of affection are illegal.
Cultural View: Nigeria is a deeply conservative society, where LGBTQ+ expressions are largely viewed as contrary to cultural and religious values, heavily influenced by both Christianity and Islam.

How sad that as the killing of Christians goes on in Nigeria and others places around the globe, the Vatican continues to be occupied with ecumenism, inter-faith dialogue and more synodality. What a scandal.

This is a proven fact, but the world is hiding it from most people.
