Francis Skips New Year’s Events Because Of Painful Sciatica

Francis is suffering from a painful flare up of his sciatica, the Vatican press office announced on December 31.

He won't preside at Sylvester’s vespers nor at the January 1 Mass but lead the recitation of the Angelus.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over Vespers and Cardinal Parolin over Mass. Francis has suffered from sciatica for several years.
