"Jesus was speaking to the crowds when his mother and his brothers appeared; they were standing outside and were anxious to have a word with him. But to the man who told him this Jesus replied, ‘Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?’ And stretching out his hand towards his disciples he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother.’" – Matt 12:46-50, which is today's Gospel. 21 July is also the feast of St Lawrence of Brindisi, a Capuchin Franciscan, scholar, apologist, preacher, teacher, and compassionate servant of the poor. He was elected Minister General of the Capuchins in 1602, and he is a Doctor of the Church. St Lawrence died in Lisboa in 1619 where he had travelled on a mission on behalf of the oppressed of Naples. This photo is of the monument in Lisbon known as the 'Padrão dos Descobrimentos', and among the 'Discoverers' depicted on the monument are two friars. Holding the Cross is a Franciscan, and behind him, with the Rosary, is a Dominican.
