Cardinal Dolan recalls sorrow over death of President Kennedy

"It was a death in the family, you definitely felt that. I just think we Catholics felt a special fervor in our sorrow that we knew everybody was feeling."

Kennedy's election to public office "had to be somewhat analogous to what the African Americans felt with the election of Barack Obama. ... It was a moment of intense pride and cohesion within the Catholic community."

While the cardinal acknowledged that Kennedy was flawed [sic], he "did take his faith seriously ... even his critics will say this was a man of magnetism who seemed to exude a sense of charism and freshness and vigor in the world."
