Organisierte Armeen sind darauf ausgelegt, symmetrische Kriege zu führen: F-16-Piloten lernen, wie man Mig 29-Maschinen abschießt. T-72-Panzerkommandanten sind darauf spezialisiert, Abrams-Panzer in Aschenbecher zu verwandeln. Die Marine sucht im Wasser nach feindlichen U-Booten und die Infanterie lernt, wie man sich in Gräben eingräbt, in der Erwartung, dass der Feind dasselbe tut. In symmetrischen Kriegen erobert der Sieger ein Stück Land und kann es halten. In asymmetrischen Kriegen ist es genau andersherum. Teenager in Flip-Flop-Sandalen wollen eigentlich, dass man ihnen ihr Land wegnimmt. Sie wollen, dass du es behältst. Hier warten sie auf dich. In Tunneln, im Dschungel, hinter Straßenmauern. Sie haben nicht die Technologie, die Tarnkappenbomber, die Marschflugkörper und die Satellitenkommunikation. Alles, was sie haben, ist der Wille, ein paar MK 47 aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und noch weniger 200-Dollar-RPGs. Aber sie suchen die Konfrontation, weil sie wissen, dass in asymmetrischen Kriegen der Sieg mit Widerstandsfähigkeit verbunden ist.
Die israelischen Generäle haben das schon vor langer Zeit verstanden. Auch Netanjahu hat es gewusst. Sie haben es vermieden, den Gazastreifen zu betreten. Am 7. Oktober hat die Hamas nicht versucht, in Israel einzumarschieren. Sie hatte einen Plan, um Israel in den Gazastreifen zu locken. Sie plante, Israel in einen asymmetrischen Schauplatz zu ziehen, und Israel war dumm genug, in die Falle zu tappen.
Es fand sich in einem Krieg wieder, den es niemals gewinnen kann.

The navy looks in the water for hostile submarines and the infantry learn how to dig themselves in trenches expecting the enemy to do the same. In symmetric wars the winner takes a piece of land and manages to hold to it. But in asymmetric wars it is the other way around. Teenagers in a flip flop sandals actually want you to take their land. They want you to hold onto it. This is where they are waiting for you. In tunnels, in jungles, behind street walls. They don’t have the technology, the stealth bombers, the cruise missiles and the satellite communication. All they have is the will, a few MK 47 from WW2 and and even fewer $200 RPGs. But they seek confrontation because they know that in asymmetric wars victory goes together with resilience.
Israeli generals have understood it long time ago. Netanyahu has also known it. They avoided entering Gazagrad. On 7 October the Hamas didn’t try to invade Israel. It had a plan to lure Israel into Gaza. It planned to pull israel into an asymmetric theatre and Israel was stupid enough to fall into the trap.
It found itself in a war it can never win.
