Cardinal Dolan, the president of the US Bishops conference expressed his dismay about Pope Benedict’s resignation. Unlike him, the president of the German Bishops Conference Archbishop Robert Zollitsch was not too sad, saying that it is from the human and religious point of view a huge gesture. According to him, Pope Benedict gave a shining example of a true sense of responsibility and vivid love towards the Church. Alois Glueck the president of the dissenting but very powerful central committee of German Catholics declared: The Pope must have come to the conclusion that the church needs in these times a capable of acting / active and present Pope.

The spokesman of the Vatican press office Fr. Lombardi said it is expected that after resignation Pope Benedict would devote his time to contemplation and prayer. At the beginning, until the preparations of his new home will be completed, Pope Benedict will stay at Castel Gandolfo. Then he will move to the former Carmelite Monastery within the Vatican. Father Ray Blake writes on this issue on his blog hoping that if Pope Benedict will live at the Vatican, he might be still having a big influence on the Vatican politics.

Max Seckler, a German theology professor and close friend of Pope Benedict, said after Pope resigned: "He suffered a lot under certain things that were part of his role. It is hard to imagine what intrigues he had to deal with in Rome. It burdened him because he is a theologian and noble person. "He has always been prepared to take bold steps, and this is one of them." Mr Seckler also recalled that in 1960 the then trendy theologian Joseph Ratzinger had backed an initiative calling for bishops to be limited to eight years in office. "Perhaps he has remembered this now", Seckler concluded

The Society of St. Pius X issued a statement on the resignation of Pope Benedict. In the statement they emphasize the big gratitude they feel towards the Pope for everything he did for the Traditional Latin Mass and for the Society itself by lifting their excommunication. The society prays that, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the cardinals of the next conclave may elect the pope who, according to the will of God, will work for the restoration of all things in Christ (Eph 1:10).
