The seminary of Barcelona Archdiocese (2M Catholics, 300 priests) will have a single admission for the coming academic year. Simultaneously, Francis is waging a war against the "conservative" party of the Novus Ordo Church (e.g. Opus Dei), which has provided the archdiocese with many seminarians. GerminansGerminavit.Blogspot (September 5) compares Monsignor Salvador Bacardit, 71, the rector of the seminary, to a chameleon who one day appears in shorts at a conference of anti-Catholic priests and the next day is seen in clericals surrounded by his seminarians but credits him with good manners and a conciliatory character and with a very good team of formators. The blog would wish that Bacardit would be replace but has little hope that the stubborn Cardinal Omella, 78, will do so.

That is a pathetic number of priests for a diocese so large. It’s no wonder they only jave one new seminarian, because things must be bad. According to Catholic Hierarchy, they had a 20% decline in priests from 2018 to 2020 (376 to 303), which is actually better described as a crash than a decline.
