"Leo XIV Continues Along Synodal Path" - Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops

Archbishop Filippo Iannone has strongly defended synodality, arguing that resistance to it stems not primarily from structural or doctrinal concerns, but from a lack of conversion.

He made these remarks in his capacity as President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America in a message for the upcoming Day of Hispanic America on March 1. Archbishop Iannone is the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.

According to him, a “lack of conversion” is the principal reason certain themes still require deeper personal and communal assimilation. He applies this diagnosis specifically to synodality.

“As we all know, Pope Francis convoked us to the synodal renewal of the Church, motivated not so much by this or that innovative idea, but as a gesture of fidelity to the Gospel and to the ecclesiology of the constitution Lumen gentium.

Pope Leo XIV continues to guide the Church along this path, which to a great extent once again proposes the importance of understanding our unity, our communion, as a dynamic reality, that is, as the People of God who walk through history, and as a deepening of our baptismal identity and of its constitutive ministerial dimension.”
