Newest Edition: Ice Chapel at Michigan University (Pictures)

This year’s ice chapel at Michigan Technological University features a heightened pulpit, side aisle, and stained ice windows.

The chapel is created annually and used for Eucharists starting this year on February 11 (video). In 2014, students of St Albert the Great University Parish entered an ice sculpture building contest, but failed. 2015 the theme of the contest was vacation. The same group carved St Peter’s Basilica and won.

By 2016, the idea of an ice chapel was born. It was realised annually since and progressively embellished. In 2021, pews were added, this year windows. Food colour was used to dye water which was frozen and shattered to create small coloured pieces which were used to create different patterns and images.
