Cardinal Parolin Rules Out Francis' Resignation

Cardinal Pietro Parolin has visited Francis at the Gemelli Hospital on 2 and 9 March. Francis' condition has improved in between, he told journalists on 16 March before "The Ramadan Table - Iftar", a lavish meal at a luxury Rome hotel, organized by the Moroccan Embassy to the Holy See.

The cardinal said that the medical bulletins [as opposed to the unreliable daily bulletins from the Holy See Press Office] "tell us exactly" what Francis' conditions are.

Cardinal Parolin made the visits together with Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, his deputy at the Secretariat of State.

In-depth talks with Francis were hardly possible, Cardinal Parolin continued: "You have to consider the Pope's situation, we present him with the questions and problems that need to be resolved, and the Pope gives his indications."

Asked if he had spoken to Francis about a possible resignation, Cardinal Parolin replied categorically: "Absolutely not."

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin denied that during his three recent visits to Pope Francis — who has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since Feb. 14 — they had discussed the possibility of the pope’s resignation.
“No, no, not at all,” the cardinal replied when asked by reporters after the “Iftar: Ramadan Table” event held at the St. Regis Hotel in Rome on Monday.
