This has been discussed and even parodied concerning the "progressive" telelvision show, Star Trek. In the 1960s, it was quite radical compared to more traditional programming. Negroes and Russians as officers on the bridge during a time of domestic race-issues in America and political tension with the USSR internationally.
But now? The show is almost laughably "right wing". Captain Kirk is a sexist. Dr. McCoy is an outright xenophobic racist... and that's just for starters.
