12-17 Years of Prison for "Climate of Terror and Fear"
Vila Nova de Famalicão Court, Portugal, imposed prison sentences of 12 and 17 years on Father Joaquim Milheiro, 90, a former parish-priest, and three nuns aged between 70 and 75 “for enslaving” at least nine novices and sisters, one of whom committed suicide allegedly after being forced to eat "dog poo.” She had been in the community for twenty years.
The alleged abuses took place over three decades in a monastery of the Fraternidad Misionera de Cristo Joven.
According to DiariDeGirona.cat (July 1) the court considered “proven” a "climate of terror and fear" and the "barbaric aggressions" committed by the convicted.
