7-Year Sentence Sought for Cardinal Becciu – Maintains Innocence

The Vatican prosecutor asks the tribunal to sentence Cardinal Angelo Becciu for embezzlement and abuse of office to 7 years, 3months of imprisonment, if found guilty. The hearings concluded on July 26.

Becciu’s lawyers said that the trial proved his innocence in connection with losses of 139-189m€ related to the London property deal and any other accusation.

The verdict is expected in December.

Becciu was once Francis’ right hand, first the deputy secretary of state from 2011-2018 and then head of the Congregation for Saints 2018 to his dismissal in 2020.
