The Archbishop of San Francisco, Monsignor Salvatore Cordileone, has de facto asked the Vatican not to impose new restrictions on the Mass in the Roman Rite, writes NcRegister.com (9 July).
He praised the 3 July open letter to Francis from more than 40 British artists, musicians and politicians defending the Mass, comparing it to the support for Notre Dame de Paris cathedral after the devastating fire in 2019.
One of the signatories is well-known human rights activist Bianca Jagger. Cordileone emphasises the apolitical and non-ideological nature of the petition: "Surely 'rigidity' cannot explain such an extraordinary and diverse outpouring of love for this liturgical form".
His key point: the Holy Mass inspires beauty and has attracted support even from non-believers who understand the crucial role of beauty in the creation of Western civilisation.
