Priest Arrested For “Massmurder”

Father Timothy Ngwuta from Abakaliki Diocese, Nigeria, was arrested in December after he went helping his friend, Jude Ariom, a physician, retrieve a car parked at Ebonyi Local Government Area with deflated tyres, writes AciaAfrica.org (April 25).

He received clearance from the police to do so. However, while inflating the tyres, two groups of local vigilantes demanded further settlements. After a dispute, Ngwuta was handed over to the same police which had given the clearance. He was kept in prison, tortured and later released on bail.

Surprisingly, on March 8, he was arrested again and charged with kidnapping and murder of five engineers, murder of police officers, aiding escape, arson, promoting inter-communal war because the car in question was allegedly used to commit these crimes.

Ngwuta vehemently denies all charges, saying that he was not aware that the vehicle had a criminal history. Abakaliki Diocese supports Ngwuta.
