On August 21, the U.S. Department of State notified the Vatican Secretariat of State of a possible violation of laws relating to pre-pubescent child pornography. The accusations regard a priest who is a member of the diplomatic corps of the Holy See accredited to Washington. The Holy See, following the practice of sovereign states, recalled the person in question to the Vatican. The Vatican Promoter of Justice opened an investigation.
Speaking to newly appointed bishops on Thursday, Pope Francis praised "discernment" - his code word for "relativism" - as an “antidote against rigidity" also in the field of morals, "because the same solutions aren’t valid everywhere” and concrete persons are "often immersed in a reality that can’t be reduced to black and white.”
It is unclear how these statements could be applied in the field of morals like in the case of child pornography.
