France: Bishop-Designate Throws in the Towel
On 7 October, Francis appointed the Reverend Ivan Brient as auxiliary bishop for Rennes Archdiocese.
Brient was to be consecrated bishop on 4 December. But this will not happen.
He released a 16 November statement saying that a few days after his appointment, he was "clearly diagnosed with alarming signs of incipient burnout."
Two doctors strongly advised him to resign. Brient then spoke with the nuncio in Paris and with Rennes Archbishop d'Ornellas. He resigned his appointment on 28 October. Francis accepted the resignation on 16 November.
Brient will remain diocesan priest of Vannes and take up a new post there.
