BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- In a twisted caricature of the Catholic rosary, some local gang members are sporting their own crudely handmade versions of the prayer beads around their necks, tied at the waist or wrapped around their heads.
Police investigation shows that certain gangs are using rosary beads to identify themselves — a phenomenon that has caused law enforcement to advise area schools to tell students to tuck the crosses and beads into their shirts, said Oscar Garcia, police chief for the Brownsville Independent School District.
“The rosary is a time-honored tradition, a very sacred type, but these kids have taken this and twisted it,” Garcia said
Brownsville Police spokesman J.J. Treviño said on the streets, wearing the rosary is not necessarily a gang identifier. Wearing the beads can signal that the person has a family or friend in jail.
While people can wear the rosary for various reasons, the Rev. Greg Labus …More

Wow! Satan is really going all out these days! Even the cross is being used for something bad?! Is it just me or do you feel like we are in the end times. 🙏

Perhaps a better way to fight the gangs is for "everybody" to start wearing or carrying Rosaries and crosses, and "take back" the emblems of our Faith, and start a new level of devotion among young people. This could even begin to convert the gang members into devout Catholics.

St Louis deMontfort wrote in his True Devotion:

In a word, we know that they shall be true disciples of Jesus Christ, walking in the footsteps of His poverty, humility, contempt of the world, charity; teaching the narrow way of God in pure truth, according to the holy Gospel, and not according to the maxims of the world; troubling themselves about nothing; not accepting persons; sparing, fearing and listening to no mortal, however influential he may be. They shall carry on their shoulders the bloody standard of the Cross, the Crucifix in their right hand and the Rosary in their left, the sacred Names of Jesus and Mary in their hearts, and the modesty and mortification of Jesus Christ in their own behaviour.

Just imagine if the gangs started to wear pictures of the American flag as their own emblem. I doubt that the police would advise other children to stop displaying the American flag, or to tuck it inside your shirt, so that no one else can see it. No. People would insist upon their First Amedmment right to free speech. There would be an upsurge of patriotism, and everybody would start wearing flag …More

It's just a ruse to get the Crucifix out of sight. And if we practising Catholics hide our Rosaries.....then be thankful the gangs are wearing theirs.
We should evanelise the gangs and teach them the real meaning and purpose of the Rosary....instead of just condeming them.More

Faithful and devout Catholics should be proud when sporting crosses or rosaries. In a democratic country this should not be contrevened and should be a beautiful display of devotion to one's faith. These people should be protected.
May the strong arm or the law simply do away with these gangs using Christian symboles as identification.More
