Viganò, Invoking Lefebvre, Faces the Vatican Summons

“It does not seem to me that Viganò is adhering to the Holy See in the way that Archbishop Lefebvre did his whole life – notwithstanding the latter’s criticisms and resistance.”

Weird that 1P5 thinks Vigano attributes a position to Lefebvre that the latter did not hold, when Vigano invokes him as saying we cannot be in communion with this conciliar church. Not only did Lefebvre say exactly that in his book Spiritual Journey just a couple months before he died, but all the SSPX superiors declared it in their July 6, 1988 letter to Cardinal Gantin, when they stated:

Weird that 1P5 thinks Vigano attributes a position to Lefebvre that the latter did not hold, when Vigano invokes him as saying we cannot be in communion with this conciliar church. Not only did Lefebvre say exactly that in his book Spiritual Journey just a couple months before he died, but all the SSPX superiors declared it in their July 6, 1988 letter to Cardinal Gantin, when they stated:

“On the other hand, we have never wished to belong to this system which calls itself the Conciliar Church, and defines itself with the Novus Ordo Missæ, an ecumenism which leads to indifferentism and the laicization of all society. Yes, we have no part, nullam partem habemus, with the pantheon of the religions of Assisi; our own excommunication by a decree of Your Eminence or of another Roman Congregation would only be the irrefutable proof of this. We ask for nothing better than to be declared out of communion with this adulterous spirit which has been blowing in the Church for the last 25 years; we ask for nothing better than to be declared outside of this impious communion of the ungodly. We believe in the One God, Our Lord Jesus Christ, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, and we will always remain faithful to His unique Spouse, the One Holy Catholic Apostolic and Roman Church.
To be publicly associated with this sanction which is inflicted upon the six Catholic Bishops, Defenders of the Faith in its integrity and wholeness, would be for us a mark of honor and a sign of orthodoxy before the faithful. They have indeed a strict right to know that the priests who serve them are not in communion with a counterfeit church, promoting evolution, pentecostalism and syncretism.”

Open Letter to Cardinal Gantin - July 6, 1988

It’s important to keep in mind that 1P5 is very zealous for an SSPX canonical accord, and therefore it’s not altogether surprising to see them here attempting to distance Vigano from Lefebvre (when the two are of practically identical positions).

The real question would be whether the SSPX supports driving that wedge. If so, it could indicate they still covet a deal with Rome, and that perhaps Rome plans still to give them the Prelature (which would be a masterstroke for Francis, cutting off all approved TLMs, except for the SSPX, and driving hordes of conservatives into the Society to further dilute them).

This would represent the final death of the SSPX, and also explain why Rome disbanded the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei a few years ago.
