June 2nd - Saint of the Day: Saints Pothinus, Blandina, and Companions, Martyrs of Lyons
Rome thought it could break them. It was wrong. In A.D. 177, in Lyon, France, an elderly bishop, a young enslaved girl, a teenage boy, and dozens of ordinary Christians were dragged into one of the earliest brutal persecutions of the Church in Gaul. Saint Pothinus was beaten and died in prison. Saint Blandina, a young enslaved Christian, was tortured again and again, but refused to deny Christ. Her words still hit hard today: “I am a Christian, and we commit no wrongdoing.” She was tied up in the arena, exposed to wild beasts, thrown before a bull, and still became a sign of courage for the whole Church. The world saw weakness. Christ revealed glory. Their enemies burned their bodies and threw their ashes into the Rhône River, thinking they could erase them forever. Instead, their witness helped plant the Catholic faith in France. Blandina war vermutlich Sklavin in Lyon, der Bericht ihres Martyriums unter Marc Aurel ist bei Eusebius durch Wiedergabe von Akten aus Lyon überliefert.
Demnach warf der Militärkommandeur während der Abwesenheit des kaiserlichen Gesandten einige Christen ins Gefängnis, darunter eine Familie mit ihrer Sklavin Blandina. Diese blieb trotz schrecklicher Folter standhaft, andere Mitgefangene allerdings gestanden unter den Torturen Verfehlungen, die man dann den Christen anlastete. In seinem Bericht an den Kaiser bestand der Gesandte darauf, die unbeirrt Bekennenden hinzurichten. So wurde auch Blandina in die Arena gebracht und wilden Tieren ausgesetzt, die sie aber nicht anrührten. Nachdem sie tagelang die Qualen von Mitchristen in der Arena mit ansehen musste, wurde Blandina als letzte der Märtyrer gepeitscht, gebrandmarkt, in ein Netz gebunden und einem wilden Stier vorgeworfen, schließlich mit dem Schwert gerichtet.

Photinus war nach dem Bericht des Gregor von Tours der erste Bischof von Lyon. Wie sein Nachfolger Irenäus stammte er wahrscheinlich aus Kleinasien. Während seiner langen Lebenszeit hat er die Grundlagen für das Christentum in Gallien geschaffen. Er starb in der Christenverfolgung unter Marc Aurel im Alter von über 90 Jahren.
Sein Martyrium wird berichtet in einem erhaltenen Schreiben der Gemeinden von Vienne und Lyon an die Gemeinden in Asia und Phrygien
