In large churches like Chartres there are many chapels, one of which has the Sacrament reserved (on the left side at Chartres, where I once served mass). In such churches there is nothing wrong with respectful talking in the nave.

Also wanted to mention that Malcolm Miller is well known as an expert on Chartres, has written books, and given lectures on it. His tours there have had a free will donation. He supports himself by the books and lectures.
I don't know his present situation, whether he is still giving tours or even still alive. Years ago he visited Chartres for the first time, as a non Catholic, and fell in love with it. I don't know whether he ever converted.

Is there a tabernacle with Our Lord present in the main church, other than the side chapels? I have always been under the impression that if the space is consecrated to Him and He is present then it is His, and He should always be the strict center of our adoring and God-fearing attention. Isn't this the way it used to be? Just wondering.

Used to be taught that there should be no gabbing in the presence of Our Lord in the sanctuary. Reserved for outside.
