"For the last fifty years, since the Second Vatican Council, things have happened, the divisions the Church has suffered. 'I'm on this side, I think this'. Yes, it is legitimate to think, but in unity with the Church, under Our Shepherd Jesus Christ."
This spirit of division leads us to divide people between the righteous and sinners, between “us” and “them”, he continued. We often believe that we have the correct position before God. Sometimes it leads to thinking that others are condemned. In fact, in the religious atmosphere of the time, not only Peter, but even Jesus was criticised for eating with sinners.

...for the obvious reason it contradicts the argument he was making. Contradicting himself is the sort of mistake you would make and Francis isn't usually that consistently stupid.
